What is a Bridge?
A bridge is a dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring onto the adjacent teeth. The teeth on either side of the gap are trimmed, and the bridge is permanently cemented in place. Compared to dentures, bridges are more comfortable and are usually more affordable than dental implants.

FAQs
Why does a tooth need a crown?
Common reasons for a crown include:
- A tooth is badly broken, and a normal filling may not be strong enough for chewing
- The tooth has had root canal treatment
- To improve the appearance or contour of a tooth that is discoloured, misshapen, or misaligned
- The tooth is under heavy chewing force, cracked, or needs protection from wear and tear
-
How is a crown done?
Your dentist will perform a thorough examination to determine if a crown is needed. The tooth is trimmed to make space, and impressions are taken to create a custom crown in a dental laboratory. Once ready, the crown is firmly cemented over the tooth.
What is a CAD/CAM crown?
CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing) crowns use advanced technology to scan the tooth and mill the crown on the same day. This allows for an accurately made crown within hours, eliminating the need for a temporary crown or a return appointment.
What are crowns and bridges made of?
Crowns and bridges can be made of:
- Full ceramic
- Full metal
- Porcelain fused to metal
For metal options, the gold content varies depending on the alloy. Newer materials like zirconia are tooth-colored and stronger than other ceramic options. Material selection depends on the tooth location:
- Gold or zirconia for posterior teeth
- Translucent full ceramic for front teeth
The cost of the crown also depends on the material used. With proper care, crowns and bridges can last many years.
How to care for crowns and bridges
- Maintain healthy gums by brushing and flossing properly
- Avoid biting extremely hard items like bones or crab shells to prevent chipping porcelain
- Attend regular dental check-ups every six months
I have old crowns that appear dark. Is there a problem? Should I replace them?
Crowns with a metal substructure may cast a shadow, especially if gums recede over time. Decay under a crown can also appear as a dark spot. It’s advisable to visit a dentist to check the crown’s fit. X-rays may be required. If crowns are defective, replacement is necessary.
I have missing teeth but don’t want dentures. What are my options?
Besides removable dentures, options include fixed prostheses like crowns and bridges or implant-supported crowns, bridges, or dentures.
Are crowns better than fillings?
For teeth that are badly broken or extensively decayed, crowns are the preferred option. Crowns cover the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line, while fillings only cover the damaged area.
Advantages of Crowns
- Distribute chewing forces evenly
- Provide greater support and stability
- Prevent tooth fracture under pressure
- Protect weakened teeth due to extensive decay
- Enhance smile aesthetics
- Long-term durability
